Pops, Bangs & Crackle Tuning
CRACKLE · POP · CHARACTER
Want that sharp crackle and pop on the overrun, or a burbling exhaust note as you back off? I can add it through a software calibration — for petrol cars with pops and bangs, and for diesels via a hardcut (popcorn) limiter. This is a sound-only modification supplied strictly for off-road, track and show use. Please read the notice below before enquiring.
Important notice — please read
Adding pops, bangs or crackle raises your car’s exhaust noise, which can breach UK noise and type-approval regulations for road use — the DVSA has prosecuted for this, and it can lead to an MOT failure. It can also increase wear on exhaust valves, turbos and catalytic converters over time.
For those reasons this work is supplied strictly for off-road, motorsport and show/event use. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for your car, please ask before booking.
What pops and bangs actually is
On a petrol car, the effect comes from the ECU deliberately letting a little unburnt fuel reach the hot exhaust on the overrun — when you lift off the throttle — where it ignites and gives that crackle or bang. It’s purely a sound and character change; it doesn’t add power.
Pops and Bangs
A more pronounced crackle and pop on the overrun and between gearchanges. The intensity can be dialled to taste.
Soft Pops and Bangs (Burbles)
A subtler, burbling note as you back off — the understated version if you want character without the drama.
Hardcut (popcorn) limiter — for diesels
Diesels make the sound differently. A hardcut, or “popcorn”, limiter changes how the engine behaves at the rev limiter, cutting fuel sharply to create a distinctive popping sound. Like the petrol version, it’s for sound only — it doesn’t add performance.
An honest word
I’ll always be straight about the trade-offs. This is a character modification, not a performance one — it won’t make the car faster, and over time it can add wear to exhaust components. It’s supplied for off-road, track and show use, and I won’t pretend it’s road-legal just because a car might pass an MOT on a given day.
How I work
This work is carried out fully mobile across Bridgend, Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 corridor. Your original ECU file is always read and saved first, so the car can be returned to standard at any time.
If it’s not the right fit for how you use your car, I’ll tell you rather than carry out work that isn’t suited to it.
