Gearbox Remap (TCU Tune)
SMOOTHER · SHARPER · STRONGER
A gearbox remap sharpens how and when your car changes gear — faster shifts, smarter shift points and stronger torque handling. I carry out TCU tuning fully mobile across Bridgend, Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 corridor, so there’s no workshop visit and no waiting around.
What is a gearbox (TCU) tune?
Modern automatic, dual-clutch (DSG/PDK) and automated-manual gearboxes are run by their own computer — the Transmission Control Unit, or TCU. A gearbox remap reprograms that software, in the same way an ECU remap reprograms the engine.
The goal is simple: change how the gearbox behaves so it shifts faster, holds gears in the right place, and copes properly with the torque your engine produces. The result is a car that feels sharper to drive without touching a single mechanical part.
What a gearbox tune actually changes
A TCU tune isn’t one single setting — it’s a series of changes to how the gearbox thinks. Here’s what I adjust and why it matters:
01
Faster shift times. The delay between gear changes is cut right down, so shifts feel instant — especially noticeable on dual-clutch (DSG/PDK) boxes.
02
Smarter shift points. The RPM where the car changes gear is retuned, keeping the engine in its strongest power band when you push on and out of it when you’re cruising.
03
Higher torque limits. Factory gearboxes are software-capped to protect themselves. Raising that ceiling lets the box safely handle the extra torque from an engine remap.
04
Firmer clutch clamping. More hydraulic pressure holds the clutches together, preventing slip when a higher-torque engine is driving through them.
05
Sharper launch control. Launch RPM is set to a more effective range and wheelspin is reduced, for cleaner, quicker getaways.
06
True manual mode. In manual mode the box stops auto-upshifting at the redline and won’t force a kickdown when you floor it — you stay in full control.
Gearbox tune vs engine remap
They do two different jobs. An engine remap raises the power your engine makes; a gearbox tune controls how well that power is put down through the transmission.
ECU remap
Reprograms the engine to produce more power and torque. It’s about what the engine makes.
TCU (gearbox) tune
Reprograms the gearbox to shift better and handle that power cleanly. It’s about how the power gets to the road.
On a lot of modern performance cars, an engine remap can’t stretch its legs because the factory gearbox software deliberately reins the engine in to stay under its own torque limits. Tuning both together is usually the best route on a modified car — the engine makes the power, and the gearbox is set up to handle and deliver it.
Signs a gearbox tune could help
01
You’ve already remapped the engine. If the engine’s been tuned and you can feel the gearbox struggling or slipping, the transmission software is likely holding things back.
02
It changes up too early. The box shifts up to save fuel and leaves you sitting below the engine’s power band when you actually want to press on.
03
There’s lag when you pull away or overtake. A noticeable hesitation before the box responds — pulling out of a junction or going for an overtake — is a classic sign the shift logic could be sharper.
How I work
Gearbox tuning is carried out fully mobile — I come to your home or workplace anywhere across Bridgend, Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 corridor. Your original transmission file is always read and saved first, so the car can be returned to factory settings at any time.
Not every car or gearbox is suited to a tune, and I’ll always be straight with you about that. If your box isn’t a good candidate, or a health check flags something that needs sorting first, I’ll tell you before any work is done rather than sell you something that isn’t right for your car.
