Intake Manifold Flap Disable
PREVENT · PROTECT · PERMANENT
Swirl flaps inside the intake manifold are notorious for clogging, sticking and breaking — sometimes with catastrophic results. Instead of paying for an expensive manifold replacement that’ll fail again, I offer a permanent software disable, fully mobile across Bridgend, Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 corridor. It’s an internal airflow change only, so it won’t affect your MOT.
What is an intake flap disable?
Manufacturers fit electronic flaps inside the intake manifold to shape airflow into the cylinders at low RPM, mainly to help with emissions. The trouble is they’re prone to failing — clogging with carbon, jamming, burning out the actuator motor, and in the worst cases breaking apart and being sucked into the engine.
A software disable fixes this permanently, in one of two ways depending on your vehicle:
Electronic lockout
The ECU is reprogrammed to hold the flaps permanently open, giving maximum airflow at all times and clearing the fault codes — no moving parts to jam.
Physical delete and blank
The weak internal components are removed and blanked off, and the software is reprogrammed to delete the flap control system entirely, so the ECU no longer looks for the sensors or drops into limp mode.
Signs your intake flaps are failing
Flap problems rarely happen overnight — they build up as carbon and oil vapour wear the parts down. If you notice any of these, your flaps are likely sticking, damaged or broken:
01
Sudden limp mode. The car unexpectedly loses almost all its power, struggles to accelerate and caps the revs to protect itself.
02
A check engine light. The most common sign — a diagnostic scan often shows codes like P2015 (intake flap position sensor) or related actuator faults.
03
Rough, erratic idling. On start-up or at the lights the engine shudders or the revs bounce, because airflow into the cylinders is unbalanced.
04
Loss of low-end power. A distinct lack of throttle response or sluggishness when pulling away or driving at low speeds.
05
Poorer fuel economy. With the flaps jammed in the wrong position the air-fuel mix goes inefficient, so the engine burns more fuel to do the same job.
06
Hissing or clicking under the bonnet. A broken flap linkage can cause a continuous clicking when you switch on, or a hiss from a boost leak around worn flap bearings.
Why replacing the manifold is a waste of money
When the flaps fail, a main dealer or standard garage will nearly always quote you for a complete new manifold. That’s expensive, and it doesn’t actually fix the underlying problem:
You’re paying to reinstall the same design flaw
A brand-new factory manifold has the exact same weak plastic linkages and delicate flaps. It’s not a question of if it fails again, but when.
The real cause is left unchecked
Manifolds fail because the EGR system keeps pumping carbon soot into the intake. A new manifold starts clogging with the same sludge from the very first drive.
A software delete is a permanent fix
By locking the flaps open or removing them and deleting the code, the moving parts are gone for good — nothing left to jam, wear out or break.
Massive cost saving
A replacement manifold, actuator motor and dealer labour can run from around £500 to well over £1,000. A software disable achieves a permanent fix for a fraction of that.

Bundle and save
Because flap failures are almost always caused by carbon from the EGR system, this service is rarely done on its own. Two combinations make sense:
The reliability bundle
Combine the flap disable with an EGR delete to stop carbon sludge entering the intake in the first place — fixing the cause, not just the symptom. (EGR work is supplied for off-road, motorsport or export vehicles only.)
The performance bundle
With the flaps locked fully open, pairing this with a Stage 1 remap makes the most of the unrestricted airflow into the cylinders for cleaner power delivery.
How I work
The flap disable is carried out fully mobile across Bridgend, Cardiff, Swansea and the M4 corridor. Your original ECU file is always read and saved first, so the car can be returned to standard at any time.
Locking the flaps open doesn’t harm the engine — at higher RPM the factory flaps are fully open anyway, so motorway performance is unaffected. And because this is an internal airflow change rather than a physical exhaust-emissions modification, it won’t fail an MOT or roadworthiness test. If a delete isn’t the right call for your car, I’ll tell you straight.
